The auto industry continues to look towards a sustainable future with the development of a new partnership between 10 of the world’s biggest automakers. Dubbed DRIVE Sustainability, the partnership is comprised of heavy hitters BMW Group, Daimler AG, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Opel/Vauxhall, Scania CV AB, Toyota Motor Europe, Volkswagen Group, Volvo Cars and Volvo Group.

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) announced today it has teamed up with national nonprofit, Keep America Beautiful, to award two $50,000 grants for organizations to establish Hefty® EnergyBag™ programs in their communities. The program is an innovative approach to diverting traditionally non-recycled plastics – like chip bags and juice pouches – from landfills and converting the materials into valuable energy sources.

Companies that source coconut oil from the Philippines and Indonesia – the world’s two largest producers and exporters of coconut-based products – face several challenges: little or no economies of scale, lack of financing and training resources, and a rigid supply chain all serve to increase the farmers’ dependence on middlemen and perpetuates inefficient and unsustainable agricultural practices. Now, Procter & Gamble, Cargill and BASF are working together with German development agency GIZ to solve the problems by creating a sustainable certified and transparent supply chain of coconut oil in that area of the world.

A coalition of 13 major energy industry firms, including Siemens, Shell, Statoil, Solar Power Europe and Total have launched a new initiative to limit the amount of state aid subsidies that are sent to highly polluting power plants across the European Union.
The Make Power Clean initiative comes as a response to the European Commission’s proposal to create a carbon eligibility criteria which requires companies receiving state aid for power generation to limit their CO2 emissions.

The "Food is Precious" initiative trains employees to use an electronic "smart scale" and data analysis tool to identify what is being wasted (and why) and to find creative solutions to reclaim the profit.

But Greenpeace says HSBC’s move is the first public evidence that the bank is taking its palm oil policy seriously. “After years of turning a blind eye, the financial sector is finally starting to take a tougher line on rogue palm oil companies,” said Jamie Woolley of Greenpeace UK.

British supermarkets scrambled to remove certain brands of corned beef from their shelves this month after it was found that they might be tainted by links to slave labour in Brazil.
The illegal industry traps an estimated 46 million people globally, according to the 2016 Global Slavery Index, and produces profits of about $150 billion a year, according to the International Labour Organization.
