Garnier sets its sights on being the world number-one in natural beauty  | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Garnier has also brought in a strict sustainable sourcing policy: “It’s vital for us that raw materials should be sourced in an ethical, responsible and planet-friendly way. That’s why we carefully select suppliers whose methods comply with our specifications.” A great illustration is Garnier’s Burkina Faso subsidiary, which supplies the brand with shea butter. Not only does the outfit provide a livelihood for 300 local women but it also sources ingredients as sustainably as possible, using highly efficient cookstoves to prepare the shea nuts. To prevent energy insecurity and deforestation, over 5,000 improved-efficiency cookstoves were distributed to replace traditional stoves. This has saved over 10,000 tonnes of firewood – the equivalent of 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Amazon touts success of recyclable packaging, some customers not convinced | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
This "Amazon effect" has become a common term in the recycling industry in recent years, as the company's distinctive boxes can be spotted outside many buildings. Supply chain indicators to watch this Black Friday | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
So what should supply chain managers be looking out for this season? First and foremost, make sure the right amount of inventory is available and avoid stock-outs. This has proven difficult for retailers in the past as they worked to balance inventory between storefronts and online. Last year, Walmart increased its online inventory by more than half in time for Black Friday. The goal was to increase online sales but also to ensure there was enough inventory. A few years ago, Target ran into problems with stock-outs and as a result has been improving its inventory management.

India's changing supply chain

India's changing supply chain  | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
In speaking to the Asia supply chain director for a multinational FMCG company, this view was confirmed. He projects that his company may close as many as half of the more than twenty distribution centers in the country. In addition to the cost savings, this executive pointed out the non-negligible decrease in inventory working capital by eliminating so many stock positions. There is also a significant simplification in the planning process for replenishing the distribution centers. He went further to explain that the small distributors that feed the deep trade channel in India are always cash-constrained, so having large, delayed deliveries would be unsustainable for these companies. This imposes a limit on how much distribution consolidation can occur.
