Comment: The secret to making customers care about supply chain | SCM | Supply Chain Digital | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Supply chains solve complex problems. And in the company of supply chain professionals, we use big words and complicated terms to talk about it. Words like multi-modal logistics and global transportation, mass-customisation and postponement, procurement and letters of credit, demand management, the cost of inventory and buffer stock, assurance of supply, warehousing, and the last mile.

Time to stamp out corruption in commodity trading

Time to stamp out corruption in commodity trading | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Inspired by the EITI’s transparency standard, ‘mandatory disclosure’ legislation in over 30 countries (including the EU, Canada and oil-rich Norway) cover many of the world’s largest publicly listed extractive companies. This followed years of efforts from coalitions such as the one I lead, Publish What You Pay, together with committed leaders in government, business, communities and civil society from the global South and the global North. These standards are a huge step to help channel countries’ revenues into equitable and sustainable economic growth, instead of evaporating into a few individuals’ offshore trusts and bank accounts.

Decoding barcoding: everything you’ve ever wanted to know about traceability

Decoding barcoding: everything you’ve ever wanted to know about traceability | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Managing safety along the food supply chain is incredibly hard. I remember listening to Amy Kircher give a talk at last year’s Women In Agribusiness conference where she presented the “84 ingredients of your favorite cheeseburger.” Each of those 84 ingredients move through their own supply chain before reaching your plate. As you can imagine, tracking the inputs through these chains is a complex and chaotic process.

The company has even made the recycling of its inventory easy for consumers by placing appropriate instructions on the tags.

Opinion: FTSE 100 not doing enough to tackle modern slavery | Ethical Corporation | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
At their meeting last week, Amber Rudd called on the FTSE 100 chiefs to “collaborate and share best practice”. Experience shows this is key to company success in liberating those in forced labour. Companies also need to collaborate with workers’ organisations in their supply chains; they usually know much more about where abuse of workers is occurring and why. As some of the richest companies on the world, the FTSE 100 have the opportunity to lead the charge to end modern slavery, we just need more of them to do it.

MIT think tank helps coordinate hurricane response along supply chain

Home Depot has an active and effective disaster supply chain, but even it can be strained when back-to-back calls for materials occur. Exxon Mobil likely had a strong disaster plan as well, but that was not enough to keep it from releasing an excess of vapors, a likely target of lawsuits, in the wake of Harvey. Meanwhile, despite the danger, some companies don't even plan for risk, believing it won't happen to them.

Of course, most companies operate on the up and up and management and employees do their best every day to do the right thing. But these massive and long-term deceitful practices do have an effect: It forces us to raise cheating higher on our supply chain risk register, question everything, and fake surprise when one more company CEO begs our forgiveness.
