It stems from an organization’s innovation efforts and its ability to grow it into a competitive advantage. As SASB measures point to, innovation is indeed a sustainability opportunity for companies.

Business does not set out to harm people. Apple, in outsourcing its manufacture of iPads to Foxconn of Taiwan, did not set out to be linked in the public eye to 13 suicides in six months because of poor working conditions at Foxconn.

However, if Apple had been more thorough at the outset in its due diligence of this new supplier, perhaps these deaths may have been avoided.

Factories caught cheating face repercussions. Ma’s non-profit organisation has caused some to be banished from Apple’s supplier list, be denied a desired credit rating to issue bonds or even be deprived of bank loans. For Ma, that is more effective than starting protests or lobbying local governments, which tend to raise the ire of the authorities in China.

The SDGs Should Be Like a Chocolate Advent Calendar

The SDGs Should Be Like a Chocolate Advent Calendar | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Undoubtedly, the SDGs are a groundbreaking framework that has united businesses and world leaders behind a shared vision of what a sustainable world looks like, which is incredible. But as a communications tool, I think they're flawed. Collectively, the Goals are too big and overwhelming to resonate with the average person — in the same way that talking about any international framework would be. People simply don't think and behave in numerical grids.

Are Your Favorite Jeans Part of the Climate Problem?

Are Your Favorite Jeans Part of the Climate Problem? | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Sadly, instead of increased transparency and commitments, fashion CEOs are hiding behind greenwashed PR campaigns, like the disappointing announcement made by Levi’s, Gap, Guess, Wrangler, and Lee at a New York climate week event this past autumn. CEOs of the world’s famous denim brands said they would announce climate targets in two years, a deadline far longer than necessary to complete a basic step. While these CEOs continue to delay the climate commitment process, denim supply chains are continuing to pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere without recourse.

Supply chain solutions are becoming increasingly complex and are overflowing with different formats of data, unimaginable amounts of data. Just think about it. And every single one of them has ability to interrupt the supply chain, not to mention uncontrollable factors like a flat tire on the delivery truck or a snow storm near a distribution facility.

CBS is a superior form of sustainability accounting precisely because it takes contextually relevant social, economic and environmental factors explicitly into account. It is impacts that do not contravene the thresholds involved that we can say are sustainable, not ones that violate them. And whereas CBS attends to all of that, context-free measures do not.

The Global Slavery Index puts the worldwide number of people in “some form of modern slavery” at 45.8 million.
Modern food supply chains are complex and opaque and what transparency exists is largely focused on sustainability and environmental concerns. What’s more, a recent report by the Sustainability Consortium showed that even what large food and agriculture companies know and report about the sustainability of their supply chains is more a theoretical assessment of sustainability metrics, rather than a reflection of the actual agricultural practices used.
