The necessity of sustainable supply chains

The necessity of sustainable supply chains | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Sustainable operations are no longer nice to have, but a necessity for doing business and avoiding social and legal backlash. Sustainability is increasingly top of mind for consumers, and they will likely take their business elsewhere if a brand is found to be in violation of their ethical standards. In addition to increased social consciousness, the regulatory consequences that noncompliant businesses face are immense.

New CDP report suggests suppliers lag behind on sustainability

New CDP report suggests suppliers lag behind on sustainability | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
CDP research suggests that companies moving beyond mandatory reporting are also reducing emissions more and saving money – but suppliers aren't keeping up
EcoVadis's insight:

The new CDP supply chain report 2012 shows that transparency is somehow linked to CO2 emission reduction, which seems straightforward. However, much remains to be done as only a third of surveyed suppliers have clear reduction targets and first and foremost supplier engagement towards great transparency is key as more than 60% of suppliers never responded to the survey.

Wal-Mart's sourcing guidelines get tepid reception

Wal-Mart's sourcing guidelines get tepid reception | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
Updated sourcing guidelines released this week by Wal-Mart have received a tepid reception at best, with industry watchers warning they are sceptical as to whether the new rules will be fully enforced.
EcoVadis's insight:

Despite doubts raised over Walmart's actual enforcement of sustainable procurement strategy, it recently stated a zero tolerance policy for any unauthorised subcontracting of its merchandise starting from 1 March 2013.  After the Tazreen incident, will Walmart indeed implement stricter rules and how is it possible for a company of Walmart size and scope of operations?  Here is an other related article from the Huffington Post.

Times have changed and our research shows that today’s procurement professionals actually consider themselves to be innovators. State of Responsible Business: 'Good progress, lots of room for improvement' | Ethical Corporation

State of Responsible Business: 'Good progress, lots of room for improvement' | Ethical Corporation | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

The main lesson that can be taken from this year’s State of Responsible Business report is that the value of incorporating responsible business practice and sustainability into all sides of the business is increasingly recognised, accepted, and acted upon. Those first two points – recognition and acceptance of the business case for sustainability – shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise...

EcoVadis's insight:

Great to see quite positive progress in terms of sustainability and CSR in businesses, at least as a start. Hoping that refined strategy and increasing concern add up in the near future.

EcoVadis: Calling All Brands - Arrow Value Recovery Blog

EcoVadis: Calling All Brands - Arrow Value Recovery Blog | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
one EcoVadis gold organization says that holding this ranking from EcoVadis helps the company reduce the number of audits from its customers. Essentially, he said, his customers are willing to take EcoVadis’ word that his company’s operations are among the most highly ranked, and that saves his organization enormous amounts of work
EcoVadis's insight:

Ma Yingying, a researcher at the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE), said that the only thing that motivates the Chinese to change is pressure from their customers – namely those big brands with big buying power. Her plea was simple and direct: please pressure your suppliers to do better.

Apple Makes New Pledges on Conflict Minerals, Should Begin Clean Congo Sourcing Program | RAISE Hope for Congo

Apple Makes New Pledges on Conflict Minerals, Should Begin Clean Congo Sourcing Program | RAISE Hope for Congo | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Tech giant Apple has come a long way on conflict minerals. In 2010, they were one of the worst consumer electronics companies in their response to this serious problem, and Enough Project, Campus Progress, and A Thousand Sisters protested the opening of their store in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. But Apple has started to turn the corner on conflict minerals with some substantial steps.

EcoVadis's insight:

Apple recently joined the Public Private Alliance on Responsible Minerals Trade.  With such large players entering the game,  conflict minerals due diligence is gaining momentum. Of particular interest is Apple's transparency effort and policy to require its supplier to source from certified smelters. Ongoing monitoring is recommended!

Bangladesh Fire Exposes Safety Gap in Supply Chain

Bangladesh Fire Exposes Safety Gap in Supply Chain | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it
A blaze that killed 112 workers in Bangladesh last month exposed a disconnect among retailers like Sears and Walmart, the monitoring system to protect workers and the factories filling the orders.
EcoVadis's insight:

Beyond the abominable tragedy, this article from the New York times also highlights key issues such as the opacity in sub-contracting networks, the lack of corrective actions and follow-ups once non-conformities are uncovered during audits, and of course the tragic lack of investment in what does not directly impact the bottom line...
