The Samsung labor scandal has hit Malaysia factory where the workers have to work under poor conditions and paid as little as £268 a month [A$449]. A total of 2,000 workers spend up to 12 hours a day in the plant where Samsung microwaves are manufactured. Is the company cheating factory workers?

Louise Nicholls, M&S Head of Responsible Sourcing and Packaging: “The next big challenge we’ve got is that the world of labour rights is changing. It’s no longer about ethical trade which is a risk to business, but rather a risk to rights holders and we need to set up our business to understand what that looks like.
It’s about how well you understand those risks in the extended supply chain in what is a much more hyper-transparent world. We are now in a very different space and it’s much more open, to the point where you need to be talking about what you’re doing to address these issues, and how well you’re doing your due diligence.”

The Sustainable Vanilla Initiative (SVI) aims to improve vanilla bean farmers’ livelihoods and assure the long-term stable supply of high quality natural vanilla. This voluntary food, flavors and fragrances industries program liaises with vanilla exporters, producers, sector organizations and public authorities worldwide to progress issues of governance, traceability, labor rights and technical assistance to grower groups.

Great to see new initiatives such as the SVI which addresses social, environmental and economic issues throughout the supply chain.
