100,000 Work-Related Cancer Deaths Each Year, Industry Still Fighting EU On Employee Protection  | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

A new report by the Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) has revealed intense lobbying against improved workplace-related cancer protection, despite advancing cancer research and treatments.
In the EU alone, over 100,000 people a year die due to insufficient protection against cancer-causing substances in the workplace, making the industries’ fight against stricter EU regulation of these carcinogens a severe threat to public health.

European Commission - Paris Agreement to enter into force as EU agrees ratification

62 parties, accounting for almost 52 % of global emissions have ratified the Paris Agreement. The Agreement will enter into force 30 days after at least 55 parties, representing at least 55% of global emissions have ratified. The EU ratification and deposit will cross the 55% emission threshold and therefore trigger the entry into force of the Paris Agreement.
The EU, which played a decisive role inin building the coalition of ambition making the adoption of the Paris Agreement possible last December, is a global leader on climate action. The European Commission has already brought forward the legislative proposals to deliver on the EU's commitment to reduce emissions in the European Union by at least 40% by 2030.

Great news! The international agreement to combat man-made climate change will take effect as from next month; less than a year after negotiators from more than 190 countries reached a final deal.

New EU air pollution directive reinforces international commitments  | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

In the wake of a supportive European Parliament vote in November 2016, the EU Council of environment ministers has also approved and formally adopted a new Directive to reduce air pollution.
Now, publication of the Directive, which was agreed on 8 December, is expected imminently within the Official Journal of the European Union. Importantly, the directive aligns EU rules with international commitments (following the revision of the Gothenburg Protocol in 2012.
