Renewables: Europe on track to reach its 20% target by 2020

Europe as a whole is performing well in its deployment of renewables. In 2011, renewables generated 21.7% of the EU's electricity; three years later, this figure has reached 27.5%, and it is expected to climb to 50% by 2030. The EU's initial efforts in promoting the use of renewables facilitated this continued growth which resulted in lowered renewable costs: the prices of photovoltaic modules fell by 80% between the end of 2009 and the end of 2015. Renewables have now become cost-competitive, and sometimes even cheaper than fossil fuels.

EU Expected to Amend RoHS2 Directive for Used and Refurbished Medical Devices

The European Commission is expected to present, in early 2017, a proposal to amend the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS2) Directive.  The amendment would remove the July 22, 2019 deadline for the supply and resale of non-compliant electronic medical devices, in-vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDs) and monitoring and control instruments that were first marketed in, or imported into, the European Union or the European Economic Area (EU/EEA) before their RoHS2 cut-off dates.  If adopted, certain second-hand devices, as well as refurbished devices may continue to be marketed beyond 2019.

EcoVadis's insight:

Such adoption may take longer to be adopted and more amendments to the RoHS2 Directive may be introduced

European Commission - Paris Agreement to enter into force as EU agrees ratification

62 parties, accounting for almost 52 % of global emissions have ratified the Paris Agreement. The Agreement will enter into force 30 days after at least 55 parties, representing at least 55% of global emissions have ratified. The EU ratification and deposit will cross the 55% emission threshold and therefore trigger the entry into force of the Paris Agreement.
The EU, which played a decisive role inin building the coalition of ambition making the adoption of the Paris Agreement possible last December, is a global leader on climate action. The European Commission has already brought forward the legislative proposals to deliver on the EU's commitment to reduce emissions in the European Union by at least 40% by 2030.
EcoVadis's insight:

Great news! The international agreement to combat man-made climate change will take effect as from next month; less than a year after negotiators from more than 190 countries reached a final deal.
