Retailers take aim at packaging waste

Retailers take aim at packaging waste | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Retailers are looking for waste reduction strategies as packaging waste continues to grow, starting with decreasing the amount of non-recyclable packaging on the products they sell. The amount of packaging waste generated annually in the U.S. has increased by 185% between 1960 and 2015, from 27 million tons to almost 78 million tons. Recycling has become an increasingly common way to deal with this stream. Only 10% of this waste was recycled in 1960, but more than half was recycled in 2015, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The practice of curbside recycling didn't take off until around the 1990s.

EcoVadis's insight:

As consumers become increasingly aware of the effects their choices have on the environment, and ethical consumption continues to grow as a hot topic, a brand’s reputation for sustainability is of paramount importance. There are several waste reduction strategies a company can adopt  for instance reducing, reusing and recycling packaging materials.

Novozymes, VTT Crafting Next-Gen Solutions to Plastic Waste (and More)

Novozymes, VTT Crafting Next-Gen Solutions to Plastic Waste (and More) | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Carbios — a French sustainable chemistry company specializing in technologies enabling recovery of plastic waste and the production of bio-polymers — has embarked on a joint development agreement between itself, leading enzymes producer Novozymes, and Carbios subsidiary Carbiolice. Under the terms of this multi-year agreement, Novozymes will upscale and produce Carbios’ proprietary enzymes — which will produce and commercialize a new generation of products enabling single-use plastics to be fully biodegradable in any environmental condition — and become the long-term exclusive supplier of plastics degrading enzymes to Carbiolice. According to Carbios, the collaboration is an industry first in the field of bioplastics that aims to catalyze the production of single-use plastics that are environmentally friendly and cost competitive.

EcoVadis's insight:

It’s paramount to dispose of single-use plastics properly. Every person who selects single-use products has the obligation to make sure these items are recycled or disposed of in a trash can and kept out of the environment. Thus, the industry must educate its customers on the disposal of single -use plastics.

UK plans to make plastic packaging producers pay for waste disposal

UK plans to make plastic packaging producers pay for waste disposal | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Britain is to set out plans to overhaul its recycling system on Monday, including making plastic packaging producers pay the full cost of dealing with their waste and introducing a deposit return scheme for cans and bottles. The plans, which also aim to make household rubbish collections more consistent around the country, will be introduced by Environment Secretary Michael Gove and go out for consultation for three months. "We will introduce a world-leading tax to boost recycled content in plastic packaging, make producers foot the bill for handling their packaging waste, and end the confusion over household recycling," Gove said in a statement.
