Transparency International recently reported that emerging market multinationals have dangerously low transparency standards. Specifically, 75 of 100 assessed companies (in their report) scored less than 5 out of 10 overall and scored an average of 48% for disclosure of their anti-corruption programs.

It is a must for SMEs as well as large companies to keep up with new regulations and compliance even though this can be time consuming and challenging.

EcoVadis's insight:

According to this recent E&Y study, less than half of firms sampled carry out third- party due diligence in their supply chain. Is it because of a lack of  available ready-to-use solutions, lack of pressure from legal/compliance departments about potential sanctions and liabilities?  The absence of a proactive approach from U.K. companies can also be explained by the lack of prosecution cases so far.

However, the company also offered something of an olive branch to IOI Group, confirming it would work with IOI, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders to "address and remediate the proven complaints and to demonstrate its commitment to fundamentally and transparently change the way it drives sustainable palm oil development to meet the highest social and environmental standards".
EcoVadis's insight:

Very encouraged to see the commitment to help this supplier improve. Ideally we'd see them set some performance targets that go beyond just he compliance.

Updated sourcing guidelines released this week by Wal-Mart have received a tepid reception at best, with industry watchers warning they are sceptical as to whether the new rules will be fully enforced.
EcoVadis's insight:

Despite doubts raised over Walmart's actual enforcement of sustainable procurement strategy, it recently stated a zero tolerance policy for any unauthorised subcontracting of its merchandise starting from 1 March 2013.  After the Tazreen incident, will Walmart indeed implement stricter rules and how is it possible for a company of Walmart size and scope of operations?  Here is an other related article from the Huffington Post.
