Global professional services firm Accenture is working with major global firms including Mastercard to introduce a blockchain-based circular supply chain, according to a press release published on Feb. 25. An active user of blockchain and digital ledger technology, Accenture now intends to employ the tech as a key component to boost the circular supply chain. The term circular supply chain encompasses all stages on the supply chain, from the beginning to the end, in order to eliminate waste and improve sustainability for the environment.

The Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, (SGP) has set its goals for the print manufacturing on how to acheive higher levels of responsibility and sustainability. The fifth anual SGP Community Day, held in Cincinnati, included in-depth discussions on a wide range of issues that the print and retail industries are facing, specifically with respect to the circular economy, green procurement and recycling. For the cosmetics and personal industry, printing plays a large part in the production of packaging, both for labeling and for the design of secondary packaging.

The concept of a ‘Circular Economy’ has been growing in prominence over the past few decades, particularly as corporate social responsibility has become increasingly integrated into mainstream business strategy. This trend is likely to continue as the current linear economic system is challenged by growing resource scarcity.

Anheuser-Busch InBev’s sustainability team has been busy. Since launching ambitious new sustainability goals for 2025 early last year, the world’s largest brewer began requesting supplier data through CDP and placed an order for 800 hydrogen-electric semi trucks, and started sending leftover alcohol from their European headquarters to a biofuel plant.Their 2025 goals cover smart agriculture, water stewardship, circular packaging, and climate action. Virginia Covo, AB InBev’s global director for sustainability supply chain, is responsible for the climate action pillar. She’s also in charge of the company’s sustainability reporting and supply chain engagement. We recently caught up with Covo to learn about her approach to reducing emissions, particularly the indirect Scope 3 ones.

In a report, Global Food and Drink Trends 2019, Mintel highlights the momentum for more sustainable approaches to business, fuelled by increasing awareness and demand from consumers. “A circular view of sustainability that spans the entire product lifecycle requires action from suppliers to consumers,” the report said.
