Brazil, the world’s second-largest tobacco producer, provides a positive example for tackling hazardous child labor. Brazil barred children under 18 from any work with tobacco in 2008 and established penalties for child labor violations – not just for farmers, but for the companies purchasing their leaf. Though the labor ministry was understaffed and lacked the resources to carry out sufficient inspections, the farmers we interviewed understood that children were not permitted to work and feared the penalties.

Great Job Brazil! Child labor has not been completely eliminated in Brazil, but there has been progress in keeping children out of hazardous work and protecting adult workers.

Small is beautiful as Rio 2016 gives suppliers a sustainable leg-up | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

In partnership with the Rio 2016 organising committee and with input from some of Brazil’s largest companies, the CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Procurement) has prepared a handbook to help Brazilian companies of all sizes implement sustainable procurement practices. That will serve to raise standards in the Brazilian supply chain and increase the competitiveness of the country’s small and medium companies.

Great to see that Rio 2016 has inspired small businesses and as rightly mentioned in this article "the Games will soon be over, but companies have learnt that they cannot separate purchasing from sustainability"
