Business models create downward pressure on labour standards in global supply chains, says ETI 

A report commissioned by ETI has investigated how business models are at the forefront of creating pressures on labour standards in global supply chains. The Business Schools of King’s College London and the University of Warwick find that aggressive price competition and a reliance on supplier sourcing models drive deteriorating standards. Meanwhile, the rise of fast and super-fast fashion compounds problems. As do ‘no-frills discounters’ in food retail. Against this backdrop, the report recommends changes across the business spectrum – at shareholder, consumer, competition and production levels.

Smithfield Foods achieves sustainability goal in grain supply chain | Sustainable Procurement News | Scoop.it

Smithfield Foods Inc. announced that it has successfully engaged 80% of its grain supply chain -- which is used to feed the company’s hogs -- in farming practices that are both sustainable and reduce the cost of production for grain farmers. This exceeded the company’s original goal of 75%. In 2018, Smithfield purchased grain from producers who use efficient fertilizer and soil health methods across approximately 560,000 acres of land.

A restaurant chain with 260 branches across the UK has signed a contract that will see the company implementing an innovative and reliable approach to a number of issues faced in the world of food, drink and hospitality. The Pizza Hut chain boasts a commitment to ‘responsibly manage our resources to help our people, guests and planet’. Director of Supply Chain and IT for Pizza Hut Restaurants in the UK, Steve Packer, saw the integration of ARCUS® as the perfect way to ensure the chain adheres to those commitments.

Human trafficking, essentially modern slavery, happens all around the world, even in developed countries such as the United States, and poses risks to companies across all industries. The collaboration between companies within the same industry is a powerful managerial tool for accelerating the progress of ethical, social and environmental performance among all companies in a supply chain.

Tyson has started using DNA to trace beef from the ranch of origin to the restaurant or retailer where it is sold. This ability is currently only available for its Open Prairie brand beef, Kent Harrison, the vice president of marketing and premium programs at Tyson Fresh Meats, told Supply Chain Dive. It is using a process developed by IdentiGEN.

The Kellogg Co. is working toward a goal of using 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by the end of 2025. The packaging goal becomes part of Kellogg’s global sustainability commitments, which include responsible sourcing of ingredients, sustainable agriculture, and resources and training for holders of small farms. Battle Creek-based Kellogg cited data from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation showing 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling globally and 5% is retained for secondary use. Kellogg already has taken steps in sustainable packaging. The company has a goal of transitioning to compostable and paper food service products in all its plants and offices globally by the end of 2018. Kellogg also is working with suppliers to identify packaging designs that minimize waste. An example is in Europe where Kellogg wants its cereal pouches to be recycle-ready by late 2019, which would remove an estimated 480 tonnes of non-recyclable packaging from its supply chain each year.

The  Food and Beverage industry has a significant potential to impact the sustainability of supply chains, and makes it a crucial element to achieving a circular economy. Food and Beverage packaging is among the most recycled packaging and we see increasing recycling rates for bottle and containers every year.
